Promo 2021 – Legal and Policy Officer
“Don’t be afraid to apply for positions for which you don’t (yet) feel legitimate. Many recruiters are only waiting for one thing: to give you a chance.”
A CAREER IN THE CIVIL SERVICE
Barely two months after graduating from HEIP, Pauline Chaumet joined the French Ministry of the Economy as a project manager in the Directorate General for Enterprise. It was an impressive first experience that laid the foundations for her commitment to public service.
She deals with economic and urban planning policy issues, participates in commissions with elected officials, drafts clear and accessible legal opinions, and follows government directives.
She then joined the CNAM as apublic buyer, a little-known but essential profession combining law, financial management, diplomacy and interpersonal skills.
“In the civil service, every job teaches you rigor, adaptability and a sense of service.”
DAILY LIFE IN THE CIVIL SERVICE
In her various roles, Pauline alternates between drafting contracts, analyzing departmental needs, meeting suppliers and preparing award committees.
A typical day?
- File processing
- Appointments with departments or suppliers
- Administrative commissions (especially on Thursdays at the Ministry)
“These are professions where listening, precision and the ability to synthesize are essential.”
MULTIDISCIPLINARY TRAINING AT HEIP
Pauline began her career with a Bachelor’s degree in Political Science and International Relations, followed by a Master 1 in International Business, during which she obtained AMF (Autorité des Marchés Financiers) certification.
She concluded her career with an English-language Master’s degree in “International Business and Diplomacy”, reinforcing her global vision of legal, economic and political issues.
“HEIP gave me a solid legal foundation and a general culture that means I now feel as well prepared as someone from a traditional law degree.
HIS ADVICE TO FUTURE GRADUATES
- Multiply your experience
Do internships in both the private and public sectors. Don’t look for a smooth career path: confront your desires with the reality of the field. - Dare to be imperfect
You don’t need a perfect CV or speech to succeed. Accept the jobs that seem slightly out of your reach. Progress often starts there. - Be critical and curious about your own journey
- Prepare for the realities of the working world (not just interviews)
- Surround yourself
Don’t face the transition to professional life alone. Talk to alumni, friends and teachers. You’ll discover that many have gone through the same doubts and learning experiences.
“The professional world can be surprising. Exchange, surround yourself, and remember that you are not alone.”
